  • Ended up getting what I wanted, 32gb black wifi. Was around 35 to 40 in line. Once the doors opened I was in and out by 5:30. Granted I could have gone to best buy or target to get but I actually like buying at apple store. Guess it's the experience and the people.

  • Just curious. I got my new pb and am overall very very happy with it. But i am a biologist and work that i do requires up close scrutinay of several photographs. These horizontal lines make that very annoying. If this is a software problem i wont be that discouraged, but if it is hardware i may have to get a pre-october refurb. Anyone have any insight into this issue?

  • This is a total wild shot, but you're sharing your iTunes library over the network, right? It appears to be trying to make domain name accommodations for your iTunes library. I'm not sure if that's standard operating procedure or not, but it seems strange to me. Try turning that off temporarily and seeing if you get the same keyboard lock?

If you don't, then perhaps it has something to do with the way iTunes sharing is set up... if not, it was a wild goose chase. Sorry. :(

Oh, and at this point, if you haven't already, do just repair permissions for the heck of it. You never know.

  • I would say that OS 9 was Apples Vista and that was over 10 years ago.

    Things I like about SL:
    +1 I gained back about 20 gig on a 160 gig drive.
+1 App store. Yes I like the app store and the only thing I have mixed feelings about is it wants to put everything I buy in the dock. That's not gonna last long.
+1 $29. It's been a long time since I got a new OS for only $29. No wait. Never. This is the first time I've got a new OS this cheap without going through some OEM or student status ritual.
+1 Dock. I like the tweaks SL brought to the way the dock works.

Things I don't like about SL:
-1 Less stable than Leopard but the biggest culprits I found for making my machine lose its mind were: Firefox 3.x, Eyefi center (previous version), Handbrake (previous version). On the latest versions of these programs I rarely see that dastardly beach ball.
-1 More about stability. I seem to get more "quit unexpectedly" issues under SL than I used to see under Leopard.
-1 Speed. I find SL to be efficient compared to Windows but it seems to be slightly slower than Leopard on the same hardware.

As for iWork, iTunes and Steam having issues, I haven't used Steam but I do find iTunes to be less than stable no matter what OS you use it on. iWork, OTOH has been rock solid for me. I also use LibreOffice and my wife uses MS Office 2011 all of which are stable on SL.

  • Thanks for the replies! I just found it odd for their to be ads in the background like that, which are only visible for a micro-second. I would also never pirate an iOS app and was simply curious if those ads went away after purchasing as they were kind of annoying.

Now the world has really turned upsidedown...

Wasn't it Michael Dell who wanted to have Apple close up shop and sell the stock back to its shareholders only back in February?

Now Dell is doing its best to give Apple visibility, and sales!

  • Look, Apple is focused on having an Alti-Vec processor, everything has been written for that, now people say the new IBM Power PC based on Power4 might not be Alti-Vec so therefore Apple will not use them. If Apple is so worried about having Alti-Vec, then why in the hell would they be now going to an x86 from AMD. If Apple goes AMD or Intel it would have to be an x86 processor. That is what they build and they are not going to build a small number of some special high tech processor just for Apple, sorry IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Okay lets say you guys are right and Apple says...yep an AMD Athlon for our PowerMacs in Jan...then what do you do with the "i" and "e" series. Do you continue on with them as a PPC with Alti-Vec and make the PowerMacs with an x86 AMD? HOLY MOLY what a confusing thing. We then have Macs that are not even compatible with each other, you then have to make different software for different computers. What about all the PPC Macs that are out there right now. How long do companies have to make different software for all different types of machines? If Apple goes to AMD it would not be a PowerPC, and for now changing chip arc. would make for lots of confusion.

There is still something called AIM and PowerPC and this is where the future Apple processors will come from. Intel and AMD are not going to plug huge amounts of money into designing an all new chip that is completely compatible with PPC considering Apples market share. If Apple goes x86 then they might as well stick Windows XP on their machines and go head to head with the rest of the PC mess.

  • The issue wasn't addressed in 4.3. Apple doesn't find it a problem. They did it on purpose. Is anyone working on a way to fix this? It seems that the reduction of power has to be a software control not a hardware control thus it should be able to be changed by someone with programming/jailbreak experience. Any help would be appreciated!

Too bad - I know it can be resolved by using a powered USB hub for the connection, but that's not very elegant. I was hoping perhaps Apple would have conceded that there are some very good reasons for reinstating the 100 mA limit. On the plus side, I hadn't spent the money on the connector yet.

  • Was there a reason you have one of the Few Razer Mice that is not suported for Mac? Mamba, Naga, Imperator, Orochi, DeathAdder, Spectre. All are Mac compatable.
Razer Naga Spec ( the one I use)
5600DPI Razer Precision 3.5G Laser Sensor
    17 fully programmable MMO-optimized buttons
Maximum comfort for long gaming sessions
Custom interface AddOns for MMO games
    PC/Mac compatible

    From engadget.com
"Razer already provides full Mac support for a few of its gaming peripherals -- including the Naga and DeathAdder -- and basic support for others, but it's now taken avantage of GDC to "reaffirm" its commitment to Mac users. That apparently means that "all upcoming" Razer products -- including the company's line of StarCraft II peripherals -- will boast full Mac support out of the box, and that the company will be rolling out updates to some of its existing products "later this year," including the Orochi, Mamba, and Imperator gaming mice. First Steam, now Razer peripherals -- dare we say it's a good time to be a Mac gamer? "

  • Another reason Alt/Option may be "locked" is that you may have set up firmware password protection. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1352 (It actually shows up as a lock).

    If so, turn it off.

  • a cool key combo i accadentially discovered not to long ago is the command + ~ this will cycle through the open windows of the current program. so if you have 3 windows in safari open it will only cycle through them and not go to another program.

Actually its the ` not ~, since ~ would require the Shift key :D

Here's a bunch more you can accidently discover too ;)

  • thank you soo much dude!!

    oh, will this erase anything?

and do u no how i can get snow leopard back?

No, that will not erase everything, but what it will hopefully do is direct your computer to your startup disk so you will get back into Lion to do what you need (maybe back everything up?)

The re-install snow leopard insert your DVD, then restart the computer. Hold down the option bottom when you here the chimes and hold it until your boot options appear. One of them will be the DVD. Select it and wait for the installer to load (it may take a while). But honestly, get your paper done first and worry about that tomorrow.

  • i just split my HD in half, which is probably incredibly unnecessary seeing as that gives windows 250 gigs when i only play one game on it right now....haha...but then again i don't need that much space on mac either.

honestly i think it depends on how many games you plan on installing and their sizes. fi you're going to have a lot of huge games on there like mmo's and whatnot, apply liberal gigs.

I used to be a professional musician and recently decided to get back into doing some demo tracks. I have an fully loaded MacBook Pro with Garage Band. I took the GarageBand course, bought a little M-Audio Keyboard and procuced two original tunes; great! Now however, I want to go a bit further so I went into B&H Electronics in NYC and bought the Tascam (model above). The sales person told me that I would be able to plug my Yamaha and Kruzweil keyboards into the unit and that the voices from these instruments could be recorded into GarageBand. Same with the microphone and my harmonic decoder. So far, the only thing I have bee able to do is record my Ovation Guitar. I cannot get the device to recognize my keyboards or my microphone. I am ready to return it. Does anyone out there have any experience on how to make this device work?

    Thank you for your responses.
