  • Doubt screen size has anything to do with it - I'm running three displays off my Mini without any lag (2 at 1920x1080 aka 1080p and one at 1920x1200).

Do you have the Mac Mini plugged into a port labeled HDMI/DVI that is perhaps handled differently by the TV? I'm thinking image processing on the TV might be the cause of the lag, but I'm not 100% sure.

I don't have one yet, which is why I was to hear it works great though.

Amoeba is an awful place to buy used CDs - any location.

It's fine for vinyl and even new CDs releases, but the selection and prices are superior at any of the online places mentioned above - eBay, Amazon, and even SecondSpin.

Just thought I'd post this. Not only are the Lyson inks better but their CIS system can cut 90% off the ink costs.

I could sure use something like that for my Canon i9900. :p

I checked their link and they don't show it. :(

But I bet the Epson crowd will love it. :D

  • You CANNOT install windows 7 from an external drive.. Microsoft is to blame for this one as they prefer to have you install it from an internal drive.. I believe there is a way to get it to boot from a USB flash drive, but it requires a whole lot of tweaking to get it to work.. Not worth it, in my opinion.. OS X is a whole different story, however - that can be installed from virtually any external drive or flash drive.

its for my gfs parents they need ie to watch streaming. If I could get it to stream on os x I would do it in a heart beat even bought flip4mac.

  • I'm a happy man this year. I have always wanted to watch the keynote without knowing anything about what has been released but could never resist (last year I was away from any sort of computer and then I open the newspaper and boom....the iPhone. I wasn't expecting anything because I live in Australia) but this will be 4 am when Steve takes the stage. So I'll happily wake up at around 9 am (I'm on holidays) and just watch the keynote with a glass of OJ. IT'LL BE AWESOME!!!!!

  • Hello there, (TL;DR at bottom)

I have a late 2008 model 13" Macbook, that I received as a present. I haven't upgraded it except by adding more RAM.
Currently it has: 4GB RAM, 2.1 GHz Dual Core Core 2, 120 GB HDD (the original one)
I am running Windows 7 off a bootcamp partition. I choose to run win7 because I don't like using OSX.

Recently, I've noticed slow downs in start up times, and on the few occasions I use OSX, I've had the rainbow beachball quite often. Therefore, I've decided to upgrade my HD.
I live in New Zealand, so the following prices in NZD, please think of the prices proportionally. (Say one HD is $100, and another is $200. Think of the first HD in USD, then just double that price for the price of the other HD in USD)

I can spend (at most) $350 NZD, but I want to base my decision of value, not of performance. These are my options:
    - WD Scorpio Blue 500GB $102
    - WD Scorpio Black 500GB $119
    - Seagate Momentus XT 500GB $209
    - OCZ Vertex 2 25nm 60GB $239
    - Intel X25-M G2 80GB $288
    - OCZ Vertex 2 34nm 90GB $339

I need help deciding on which HD. Most of the time I use the MB for web browsing. There is minimal storage required, as I mostly have word documents etc. Although, it would be nice to have extra storage, I most likely won't use it.

Another question I would like to ask regards to OS and using an SSD. I really like Windows 7 too much. Plus my PC runs Windows 7 and I like them to be compatible. However, If I get an SSD with low space, I'd probably have to use one OS only, and I could get used to OSX if I have to.
The problem is that OSX Leopard or SL does not support TRIM, so there's no way for me to clear out the junk in the SSD. Windows 7 supports this, but I'll have to install it using boot camp, and that would take up a considerable chunk of the SSD. I wonder if it is possible to install windows 7 on my MB without having to use Bootcamp? Is there a way to get the drivers required for the hardware on my MB, without bootcamp?

Also, I seem to have lost my installation disc for OSX that came with my MB. Is there a way for me to download a copy from Apple?

TLDR: I need a new HD for my MB. Is it possible for me to install Windows 7 on my MB without bootcamp? Is it possible to download a legit copy of OSX Leopard from Apple, since I lost the installation disc?

Thank you for reading my post. All helpful suggestions are welcome and appreciated. :)

  • Call me old fashioned, but there's something about paper that I still prefer over eBooks in many situations. One advantage is you can glance at large portions of the document at the same time (by flipping around and skimming) and you can even separate a printed document and compare things side by side if needed. You can also highlight, underline, and take notes on the page.

I find myself using both on a day to day basis (well, not eBooks per se, but PDF versions of documents). I'll print out a software design document, for example, which describes in detail the stuff I'm programming or working on, for the reasons I mentioned above -- it's very handy to be able to circle something or jot down notes. On the other hand, there are a few reference documents I use on a regular basis and I like to pull up the PDF and search for specific terms.

Anyway it seems my problems go deeper as the log give me this message: "PMU FORCED SHUTDOWN, CAUSE = -122". I've been Googling and it seems it may be caused by a combination of pushing the power-supply too hard while having an uneven supply of power from the mains.

I'll try to get a cheap PMU as I've found suggestions this might help stuff. At the momen I've just disconected as many USB-perhipals as possible and this seems to have improved my up-times so far...

I wonder if they fixed this issue in iPad 2? Has anyone tried higher power devices with the USB adapter yet?

It's still f&$@!? Up on the iPad 2. The reason why I keep my iPad 1 on iOS 3.2

A big problem with the big megapixels is the amount of storage they take on your phone. You cannot adjust the megapixel size down with a phone camera like you can with a point & shoot camera. A 16 megapixel camera in a phone will not give you a better picture than a 5 megapixel camera in a phone. A phone just does not have the room to install a quality sensor.

Exactly, re: sensors. The amount of electricity-induced noise on a small 16MP sensor for a cell camera is going to render images fairly useless at large sizes (even 8.5x11 would doubtlessly require a lot of cleanup work.) For practical purposes, it may as well remain a 3MP sensor...

sorry, my messages are coming out wrong

I will not be going to the meetup to meetup in anyway and will not show in anyway i am from macrumors.

I DO need to go for the genius bar and WANT to go for the T-Shirts and my parents will come

You'll probably get different answers but my opinion would be that unless the game requires it, don't upgrade to a later system.

^^^ I agree with this. I'm not a big fan of running 8.x on 68K hardware.

For vintage gear, I like to stick to OS versions close to what the Mac shipped with (if it were me, I'd downgrade the 575 to 7.1). Any non-rare Mac from the G3 down can be had for next to nothing these days, so if you have an app that requires 8.0, I'd go grab a machine more suitable to run it. Then again, I'm always looking for an excuse to bring home another machine. :p

Just curious... how much did you get for it? I've got a MBP 2.2 15" 120GB, and if I upgrade anytime soon it would be good information about the resale market.
