  • Why annoying, because PowerPoint is so lame? You can export Keynote to PowerPoint, or to Flash, or QuickTime, or PDF.
What we really need is a Windows Keynote player downloadable for free off of Apple's website. ...Apple could probably throw one together in a day and iWork sales would skyrocket (not to mention the switching potential of the Windows users watching such a beautiful presentation on their piece of crap :D).

  • I don't think this will need a data plan

That looks good, but I did a review search and it was cited as having low audio volume. I would need that for my older mom.

    Anything else?

  • Hi all, please bear with me.... :o

We have individual iTunes libraries on our PCs and can access them via each other's PCs and iphones and stream to our Apple Express in the Living room and that's all good.

I'm now looking at getting the rest of our CDs ripped and stuck on a shared hard drive and that's all good too!

I did rip (using EAC) a shedload a while back and have somehow ended up with a folder full of albums-some in WAV and some in FLAC.

I have now seperated the albums into "FLAC" and "WAV" folders in a folder called "EAC Rips".

    Here's where my brain explodes...

We're not audiophiles and I'm happy to keep the existing music (on our PCs, in our iTunes libraries) in whatever format it's currently in (which is a mix of MP3 and Apple Lossless).

We've only recently got the Airport Express and we love it and it's rekindled my desire to have all our music available and selectable to stream to it.

As I say, we're not audiophiles, so a 1:1 copy (quality wise) is not a priority.

Having said that, what I'm thinking of doing is (if possible), convert the albums in the "EAC" folder to Apple Lossless and then stick it in my iTunes library and then carry on ripping the rest of our CDs into a format that you guys suggest.

The other thing that makes my head spin is tagging!

I really didn't realise there was so much to it and I always assumed that as long as you had the Artist Name>Album Name>Song Title that all was good (how wrong I was!).

The reason I say that, is that last night I dabbled with converting...

I added an album to iTunes last night that I didn't think was adding, (the album in question is an album that was ripped using EAC to WAV), but couldn't then see it where I would expect (alphabetically).

I then realised that the tagging had gone haywire somewhere along the way, as I found the album right at the bottom of my iTunes library (in iTunes), with pretty much the artist name/album/song title all in the artist name column!

So that's why it "wasn't there" (alphabetically) in the iTunes listing when I scrolled down looking for it.

    So-getting back to my question...

  • Is a shorten keyboard ideal to learn playing on? I see Garage Band has some lessons but I would imagine as a beginner, the last thing you want is to adjust knobs and sliders to move up/down the octaves.

I like the M-Audio Oxygen 25. Looks like a very compact but has a lot of features.

    Any thoughts?

Mine works great. I have a full sized keyboard, but I use the Oxygen 25 for composing. It sits right above my computer keyboard.

  • Who knows someday they'll be worth something. On par with vinyl? I think there is always a vintage crowd out there and in the future too. I hope you don't have to wait until you are old and gray before you see your CDs appreciate in value (sentimental and monetary).

Imagine 200 years from now on the Antique Road Show (PBS), your great-great-grandchild is astonished to hear the value of your CD collection! :D

    Just joking,

  • I'm more curious about what else may be roaming around there (considering the department it's come from).

I remember in my second year working with Apple IIs, the local clone dealer loaned us a robotic arm with an Apple II interface and software.

You could program 3 vectors and the arm would 'navigate' to that position.

I've never been able to remember the name of the device and for a school it's usefulness was limited, but it was fun to play with.

IIRC, you could program positions for each joint in a sequence and kind of make it dance to a routine. :D

I wonder if it's floating around down there?

  • Lance has said he'll retire or has even retired before I think, but coming out of retirement 'just to p*ss them off' is a bit lame.

Well, I don't think he'd go to that much trouble just to taunt the French media...If he does race I think the reason will be because that's what he does, and he doesn't want to stop.

Although, maybe it would be better for him to start competing in other Tours like the Giro d'Italia - he's already put his stamp firmly on the Tour de France.

PS. Don't diss MJ - you run a good chance of being struck down.... ;)

LOL, I never was much of a basketball fan but it was sad to see such a legend fade away like he did - it was just too hard to let go.

  • If the stick physically fits, then it won't cause harm.

At best, it'll work great, running the stick out of spec.

At worst, the PC won't boot with the 'wrong' stick in there.

Most likely (all this is assuming a 'wrong' stick,) it will boot, but will boot slower than you want. For example, if it has an 866MHz processor, it might only boot at 650Mhz. (Because, for example, it uses a 133Mhz bus, and you put 100Mhz RAM in, so it would run the processor at only a 100MHz bus, dropping it's speed accordingly.)

Or, with lots of motherboards, the processor speed and RAM speed were independent, so it would run just fine, but the memory would run at the 'lowest common denominator' speed. This is especially true of newer DDR motherboards.
so basically, if the stick fits, and its faster than the memory the computer takes, it will clock down. I dont think that will be the case, the memory is older. I am just going to throw it in. I just dont want to ruin the computer, still need it for school.

  • Finally broke down and picked up a MacMini. I have a time machine backup of my MBP and all my software installed but would like to just replace the default OS on the MacMini to save me time from having to reinstall all of my software.

    1) Is this possible?

    2) Since the hardrive size is different between the two, if I am able to restore from my MBP image (250 GB), will the MacMini only have 250GB formatted and allocated or will it format the entire 320GB and be accessible or will I need to extend the partition to reclaim the additional 70GB?

    Thanks for any advice.

  • I have no problems like you have with 10.6 with my 2007 iMac and my 2009 MBP and I run more than the average software titles. There are some hiccups (Tiger was the most stable version of Mac OS X in my eyes), but I can live with it.
Maybe you can tell us more about your situation and we might be able to help you?

hehe yeah, personally I will never understand the appeal of coldplay. I think the best review I ever read about one of there shows was "Coldplay is a sugar overdose for the masses" :p

  • at the very least, if you were not a mod, you would be a G3

...and maybe even higher guess is that 604e at the very highest reasonable level is at 15,000, and G3 at 20,000 but i would assume much lower for those levels and maybe G4 is at 20,000

...and G5 at 50,000 or 100,000 since it would be no fun for someone to reach that and have nothing to loook forward to

it could be that G5 is set at a million to make it unattainable:p

note: maybe arn has not decided yet what to give people beyond a 601 and there is no set level for the next level

Absolutely no door. I was like WTF? when I opened it up and saw nothing.

Although it's over a year old I would speak to Apple as this would appear to be a manufacturing defect.

Panther doesn't claim to support any
G3 without built in usb ports. That means the beige boxes and the first G3 laptops are out of luck.

Would Apple purposely exclude these machines even though the ability is there in both the machines and the OS?

    Of course...

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 (4 yr old) on Windows 7 Ultimate. I get a little over 3 hours of typical use on battery.

While I have not done so, I would bet that replacing the HD with an SSD would extend that time considerably.

It did on my Alienware m11x.

I know it can be done so do not post saying it's impossible, there are adapters that allow you to and ones to play it connecting it to your MBP then to the apple display, but how could I do that? What adapters would I need and how steep of a price am I looking at?

Yes I agree. I have a thin logitech wireless backlit keyboard and its been on for 4 months and I haven't changed the battery. It is also charged via USB so it works even when it runs out of battery.

Now that would be a good suggestion for the next version of the apple wireless keyboard (I have the 3 battery version). Sure a USB "charging" port could be added to the back (now that the new version is already 2 battery / 1.5 inches space saved).

Apple is great with reducing component size (so sure such a charger would be cool).

PS is there an easy way to check the battery level within the bluetooth wireless keyboard from OS X (or is there no checking hardware within the keyboard)?
