I went through the models and upgrade strategies here (http://macreviewz.blogspot.com/2010/02/quad-core-mac-book-pro.html) on my blog.

  • This is surprising. I feel like if Apple does the voice integration into iOS well enough, it could be the future of iOS. Sort of like how multitouch got things started, voice will bring it even further. I bet there were tons of people out there who were doubting touchscreens on phones 4 years ago. Everyone still wanted a keyboard.

  • Why would Apple go about doing all this work when Steve Jobs's friend Jeff Bezos has been spending the past several years scanning all of his inventory for the 'Look Inside' feature? And they cover just about every book on Earth. And they've been in the default Safari bookmarks for years. Etc.

Just because you have the content scanned doesn't mean its ready for e-book format. As I said before Apple would be better off working with e-reader who has something along the lines of 16,000+ books ready to go.

  • Why are you guys all against 3D? I think its great, BUT I think its a given that you will be able to turn off the 3D.. And if that is the case then there is no problem really :P

That's not Apple's way, though. Apple doesn't make incredible new interface designs that will appeal to a few and can be turned off for the rest, or even appeal to most and be turned off for the rest. Apple's way is: we made it, it's awesome, 99.9% of people love it, and if you're one of the 0.1% that doesn't, find a knock-off that'll pop up within a year.

3D, however, in my opinion as well as that of many others, sucks. I'd say at best, 3D has 80% of people liking it, but I suspect it's closer to 30~40% of people like them.

I tried the 3DS at a Game Stop and all the 3D switch seemed to do for me was blur the screen / add a shimmery haze around it. It kind of hurt my eyes and nothing seemed to be any more... 3D than before. So 3D doesn't work, end of story, next rumor. Unless Apple has found a way. But I seriously doubt they have, because it seems like Apple rarely assembles the pieces of technology in-house... they're the ones who see how to put the pieces together in a beautifully simple way that makes intuitive sense to consumers.

  • Is that the verdict on the screw issue?

Yes, it is. The screw has always been there. I will say that ours is no longer flush like it was at first. Brushing your hand over it means you feel the screw whereas in May we could not. So, the screw may be more noticeable if this is true for others, as well. I could see it being very annoying for some.

Does anyone know how big this would be? It would be huge. No beyond huge. Literature is as universally accepted as music. It's used everywhere from text books in schools, to training manuals, to maintenance manuals, to entertainment in the home, to entertainment while you are sitting waiting for the dentist. Imagine subscribing to a magazine and having it downloaded off of iTMS like a podcast.

In short I would sell my first, second, third born sons, and cut off a pinky toe for Apple to release an e-book reader. This is Sony's attempt:

    http://dynamism.com/images/extra/DSCN0862.jpg

No one in the market has done the design right yet. There is this huge market waiting for someone to step up to the plate and get it done right, easy, and elegant. Sound familiar?

But above all please PLEASE PLEASE dont integrate it into the iPod. It would be doing major disservice to the emerging industry.

I cannot agree more. Apple would need to add another product to their line, not replace the actual iPod with something bulkier. Some people enjoy the iPod as a music player/portable HD. Why lose their business by breaking their favorite toy (by making it bigger to accomodate functions they might not care about)?

A few random thoughts on form and function...

I don't have an iPod yet because I don't think I'd enjoy reading a lot of text on any of the actual models. Like any other university student, I have tons of academic books and articles on top of my novels, short stories and such. Since I move and travel a lot, I often have to leave many - or most - of my books behind. With e-books, I could simply bring along a small, light-weight reader and I'd have my whole library with me, easily accessible, 24/7, no matter where I am. That would be beyond cool!!! A gadget integrating music and video too would be awesome, but adding video means an LCD, which means much shorter battery life, so there is a trade-off there: the do-it-all gadget that I am longing for just doesn't seem to be here yet.

Of course, you can read e-books on a laptop, but as has already been mentioned in this thread, reading from your laptop on the bus isn't enjoyable. It can be done, but few bother. I've had a laptop for over four years and I can't say I carried it around all that much. I need something smaller... but that can grow bigger when need be!!! I'll try to explain myself... When listening to music, you don't need a big screen and you don't want to lump around a big device for no reason. When watching video, a bigger screen is a good thing. However, an LCD isn't good for battery life and an e-ink screen isn't good for video, so how about having one of each on the same device? Or have two devices that integrate together flawlessly while addressing different needs?

For example, think iPod video with an LCD taking the whole "face" of the iPod. The device has a hard drive so you can carry a lot of stuff with you at all times. Then fold it open and you'll find an e-ink screen. The e-ink screen could be roughly twice as big as the LCD if it takes all of the surface inside, so you wouldn't be reading on a tiny screen. Maybe the e-ink screen could have its own flash memory, so the device could load the documents that you want to read on there. You'd need to access the hard drive only when you want to read/listen to/watch something that isn't on the flash drive, so I assume it would help the battery life a lot. (Actually, I'm starting to think that the flash memory/hard drive combo could be cool whatever screen the iPod uses, but I'm getting off-topic.) Or maybe the screen could be something you unroll from a tube. Anyways, I think that you could have your library on one device (that has a hard drive), yet read your stuff on another one (which has a much better battery life), or on another part of the same device. It poses challenges, obviously, as you don't want to waste time transfering stuff all the time, but I think it might be the closest we can get to having our cake and eating it too.

  • I stood in line last Friday morning at the Apple Store on the UWS of Manhattan. Arriving only around 8:45, maybe 150 in line. It was clear that about half the people intended to re-sell the iPad they received. I purchased a 16 gig Verizon. It's clear the reason why Apple kept to its Europe dates is to cut down on the re-sell. Since the iPad started in Europe (and elsewhere) the Ebay mark-up is down to $50 - $100 when it was as high as $300 and even higher. Some even sold this weekend at cost. With the re-sellers out of the way, new supplies arriving, etc it's not so crazy to start selling at Radio Shack. Again, in my neck of the world, I arrived at 8:45 AM and could purchase an iPad and it is clear that anyone who arrives at 7AM is guaranteed a choice of many the various models.

  • Yeah they will. iTunes works on any Windows or Mac system. They can listen to it on their computer, burn a CD, or even rip that CD back into a format that any player can play, with a minimal quality loss. Besides, anything that discourages consumers from buying a Zune is probably good for consumers :) .

I think the main thing that discourages people from buying a ZUNE is the Zune...

anyway if this Beatles thing works with Apple, it will most likely be a limited time excklusivity 6 months to one year tops and then open to other online sellers.

  • OK, so their inital aim was implicitly to get in-the-face of smug Mac users. And then Apple "leans" on them, so they go all nicey-nice and 'decide' to a USB wifi card instead? Doesn't this seem slightly odd to anyone else?

It certainly strikes me as being a bit off, as well. I didn't think about it until you mentioned it, though. Seems like a pretty abrupt about-face.

  • Again, the military is inextricable from the economy. Not only are large sectors heavily dependent on military spending (like the town of 150,000 just west of me, that would utterly collapse if its two bases were closed), but a weaker military would risk tremendous losses in international commerce as foreign nations take back control of their own markets and resources absent the pressure of potential American military action.

If you want to cut the military budget significantly, you had best have a really good plan in place to deal with the consequences. I think it is unlikely that our brand of "capitalism" would last long without a strong Pentagon.

(Which could be a good thing, in the long run, but a treacherous bridge to cross.)

In a free and prosperous market, business exists and is done solely because it is profitable. When it ceases being profitable, it must be stopped. To keep pouring 100 units of money into something for the sake of getting 10 units of money out via payroll can only end in one thing....failure. (I'm using 'units of money' as a general example)

  • I have almost been t-boned by a compact car running a red light so what is the difference? Bad drivers are bad drivers no matter what they are driving. I drive an SUV, however it is a Ford Escape so it weighs about the same as any ordinary mid-sized sedan. I just like sitting higher and having 4WD with some ground clearance because I live in snow country. The fuel economy is about the same as any AWD mid-sized sedan and little high MPG compact cars are worthless here in the Black Hills from about November to April. Let people drive what they want to drive and don't force them into what you think they should drive.

Quite obviously you are not the target audience in your Ford Escape.

The original conversation was in reference to someone who drove a V10 Excursion. A vehicle that weighs 8,000lbs.

lol they're falling like dominoes. so how long does it take for them to go back up with the upgrade?

Is there anyone who actually got his serial number to be confirmed as a faulty one? I keep getting a " This serial number is invalid or does not qualify for the program."

While my serial number starts with 6C5353... which as far as I can check fits into the range of valid iBook battery serial numbers.

This news is sick! In just 12 hours? DAMN!

I would buy the no new iPhone rumor because OS X Lion is gonna be a game changer from what I've been reading, so they will need to focus and give a 100% to Lion. However, that doesn't mean they won't preview iOS 5, for a fall release :)

if they preview iOS 5 for a fall release. can we safely assume that the iphone 5 will be released along with it?

It looks great! I'll be adding this to my arsenal of editing tools for sure.
