  • It would be really disappointing if they waited with this upgrade for mwsf 2007. I mean, what's new, apart from the very expected Core 2 Duo and the very slow upper hard drive option.

No, I expected at least a different Intel graphical chipset and an upgrade to 1 GB RAM over the full line. Also, it's still $1099, not $999.

Rather disappointing upgrade, Apple, whas this all you did in almost half a year of development?

  • Well... but at least it's not Apple's fault, because they didn't produce the driver. Therefore it's actually not a concern of Apple's but of the driver's producer's.

On the other hand Apple did include it into it's OS seemingly without testing it thorougly, and that is, of course, a concern of Apple's. So they will have to work together to get rid of that - and I'm sure they will - and I may be smug again. :p

EDIT: Bzzzt to me for my prior comments about it being Apple's issue; apparently, the vulnerability is caused by a third party card driver. Does anyone know if that's apple's driver or the third party card driver which must be installed by the user?

  • initial backup over wifi (required) then future incremental (smaller) backups could be over 3G. the iPhone already tells you when an app is to large to update w/o wifi - it's already been training us about what we can and can't do w/o wifi.

who determines what qualify as future incremental backups? What if I do my initial (required) backup over wifi, then add 5gb of photos? Don't think the wireless carriers are going to go for that.

But that's besides the point... i was referring to apple giving everyone free cloud storage.

As of January this year, over 160 million iDevices have been sold. Consider maybe an average of 20gb per device and apple is looking to give out 3.2 billion GB of cloud storage to it's customers. Something tells me this is not going to happen. You think they want to let everyone back up their 64gb iPod touches to the cloud. You think apple or att/verizon is going to be ok with people backing up their 32gb iPhones to the cloud? No way, not a chance...

  • haha I love all the people in this thread ripping on "FLASH SUCKING" yet have no clue in the difference in development costs of making most Flash Sites with html4 or html5 and ajax.

Half of the stuff Flash does is still impossible in HTML5. It may be slow in some area's but that isn't because Adobe is lazy it's simply due to the way the technology has to work to support all of it's features.

IMO Apple should take heat from this. They have no reason -not- to allow the plugin and have it turned off by default so users don't get battery drain while browsing the web.

  • The last time I checked the people of the Congo hadn't asked for US help. Or were you just attempting to confuse the issue?

I'm sure some of them have, sorta how some of the Libyan people have.

    Side note:
I'm seriously worried what will become of the power vacuum when Qaddafi leaves. To think the rebel forces are somehow an actual organized group is absurd. The only thing unifying many of these people is the will to see Qaddafi fall. After that there will be a mad struggle for power, most likely in conjunction with half assed elections.

This whole Libya situation is going to blow up in the not too distant future. I forsee the civil war shifting after Qaddafi leaves into the rebel forces fighting amongst themselves.

I shudder to think what is going to happen if we arm them, hopefully Obama wasn't just talking out of his ass when he said we actually need to learn from history for once. Our country's cycle of support>arm>aid>turn against>support new group needs to stop, as it is directly responsible for much of the instability we've seen in the world over the last 20+ years. We create our own enemies to fight after they no longer serve our interests.

  • Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying we need religion to raise children, but we better have a moral code of some kind to replace it with.

The overwhelming majority of humans are born with a built in 'code' already. It's something called 'empathy'.

  • In other words, this attention-craving hacker decided to use a Mac to demonstrate an exploit that is far more threatening to a PC. The chances of a Macbook user a) buying a 3rd party wireless card and b) hooking it up to a Macbook are slim and none.

    +++

    Quoted for truth.

This is the key to this story, and I'm very disappointed in the media for completely missing this. The 3rd party peripheral being used was not secure, and *ANY* computer using this device could be compromised...even a Mac. But they really should point out that Mac's don't need these devices, so it's really a hypothetical demonstration.

Mac OS X has become the Everest of hacking challenges... these guys just took a helicopter to the top rather than climbing. But eventually, malware that affects OS X will start to create some issues... however, regardless of market-share, the design characteristics of OS X will keep malware from ever becoming the issue it is for Windows.

    Cheers

  • No, not 100%. You can't possibly know, unless you've surveyed every CSX pirate there ever was. Case in point. You have a full time job, and in this inflating economy, it's not enough to support your family. So, you try to do a little work on the side - just to help pay the bills. Does this person have $1200 to spend on the software? No way. Would he like to? Of course, but his family comes first.

So you're saying this theoritical guy that doesn't already have a copy of the CS5 program he's talented in using wouldn't make enough money to pay for it but would make enough to support his family ?

Case in point, people who pirate the CS5 Master Suite probably don't ever use half the applications in it and probably don't have the required talent to even use it professionally. People who do either have their work pay for it or can afford themselves as freelancers.

No, again. not any goofball can learn Photoshop and Illustrator. You need to have a certain amount of talent in order to make sense of the tools your are working with. Also, each one can enhance the usability of the other over time with practice, and a lot of trial and error.

You agree with him. You're saying the same thing as he is, that without the talent and knowledge to make sense of the tool, all you're doing is clicking through the tools as the tutorials you've found dictate and not actually "designing" anything using them or even doing art at all.

IE, talentless hacks thinking that because they read through "Teach yourself Photoshop CS5 in 24 hours", they're now a graphics artist.

  • MY GOD

I just woke up from a nap and have at least a DOZEN e-mails from PC-owning friends and famailies saying stuff like "What's up with your boys?!?!?!"

I kindly link them to the 4.1 million Dell's being recalled. :D
My girlfriend is having a field-day. Being a Dell fan-girl, I was like nyahhhh your laptop's gonna explode.

Now she's getting her own back (http://www.thehobsite.com/blog/?p=258) :(

  • Still, this is a very nice machine, probaby the best iBook ever. The C2D is so powerful compared to the G4 it's mind boggling. What's worse, it's more powerful than my dual G5 tower. And my machine is only 2 years old! Same with my 12" PowerBook. All in all, for what I paid for my PB, today for the same cash, I can buy a machine with 8x the computing power. Maybe if I wait another two years to upgrade, computing power would be 64x!! :)

  • When you're married, it's a partnership, and it's no longer a case of "your money" and "her money", but a case of "OUR" money. Once responsibilities are out the way, then personal purchases can be looked at, but unless you're in a job where you have a LOT of disposable income far in excess of what's required to pay the mortgage and many bills, then yes it's only right you make sure you have the money to go out and buy a gadget which, most of the time, only you will use.

I'm fortunate that my wife enjoys using technology, but I still wouldn't go out on payday and just buy a new gadget without at least letting her know I was doing it, and if I spend money on something, it's only fair she does the same ... which means for whatever you spend, you need to double it and again it's only after looking at bills and responsibilities that you can do so.

While I don't necessarily disagree with you, what you describe is the reason that the #1 problem in marriage is money. Just because we're married doesn't mean that we lose that desire to want things exclusively for ourselves and while compromise is sometimes possible in a healthy marriage, when that compromise can't be met you start down a road of unhealthy behavior that is spawned almost exclusively by money.

  • Then why bother with the Old Testament? Seems to cause a lot of problems.

It can cause a lot of problems when people misinterpret or don't understand it. And lots of modern believers do avoid reading the old testament, especially books of the law like Leviticus and Deuteronomy (because they can be hard to understand).

For me personally, I enjoy reading the narratives of old testament figures like Abraham, David, Joshua, Moses, Solomon, Isaac, etc. etc. These people were far from perfect and much of what we learn from them is in taking note of the mistakes they made. It gives me comfort knowing that if God can use them then he can possibly use me despite the numerous mistakes I make.

Then there are the accounts of people like Job and Joseph. These stories provide such great encouragment as you see how they navigated and overcame such great hardship. Reading their stories provides hope.

Wisdom and poetry books like Psalms and Proverbs are also encouraging and easy to read with their straight forward style and memorable sayings.

I'd encourage everyone to read the Bible. Even if you don't believe it is divinely inspired you can still learn from the collective wisdom of what it contains. It seems that the atheist book the OP started this thread about would contain a good collection of human wisdom and knowledge. I don't know about it being representative of the beliefs of all atheist, but it most likely contains good information from the experiences of those who have gone before us. I would like to think that non-believers could view the Bible in much the same way regardless of whether they believe in God.

Great question lee, thanks for asking. :)

UGH why haven't they updated the MBP's yet?? Apple has totally dropped the ball on this year's college students for sure (at least those looking for apple laptops). My girlfriend is required to buy a MacBook Pro for interior design, and I keep telling her to wait because Merom has got to be right around the corner.

What about the laptops???? MBP's haven't been updated once and iMacs have been getting all the love. Count it!

eeeeeesh - has Dell even started shipping their Core 2 Duo laptops!?!?!? The iMacs were in greater need of an update than the Macbook Pros (they haven't been selling as well) - now that the iMacs have made the transition, though, I'm sure we'll see some new Macbook Pros by the end of Sept....

No it's Level 42's Something About You

    lol

Being a Brazilian I can easily say that not only import taxes are high here - hiring people is one hell of an expensive move too. It`s actually one of the big reasons why lots of companies do not have factories here! Most of them go to China - that`s where production is cheap.
Even if Foxconn decides to pay the minimun wage here, there`s still so many taxes, fees and other stuff that they`ll have to pay for the workers that I find it hard for it to be good at all for either Apple or Fox.

So.. if you were waiting for this move to reduce the prices on :apple: gadgets, keep waiting.. because it`s more likely they will raise it even more :p

I don`t know but I`m a bit skeptical about this. Especially since we`re talkin about 12U$ billion!

What's the vibe on this update for people who haven't had any RSS problems so far, and whose machines haven't been in for service at all???

I'm tempted to do it anyway, to stave off the possibility that it might eventually go to **** in a couple months (a la people whose week 19 machines have been fine till yesterday kinda thing), but then that old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" pops into my mind...

I've got a week 18 BlackBook, no problems at all, never a random shutdown after both the 1.0 and 1.1 firmware updates.

The 1.0 raised my idling temp to around 54 and the 1.1 update pushed it up to about 56 but other than that no problems.

Unless it's an entirely new OS, like iOS 5 for example, it should be able to recognize what version your device is running and download only the essential features of the following update. Having to download the entire OS (which is over 600mb) every single time is a bit ridiculous.
