  • Reception to the original iPod launch was mixed. Our own forum responses (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=500) are interesting to look back on, 10 years later.

Interesting indeed! Several forum members where asking for further development of Newton instead... a device that could possibly do everything digital... optical out... and so on. And here we go, only then year after we have these portable iDevices, so no need the iPod anymore. But I can operate the iPod without the need of looking at it, thanks to the scroll-weel, a truly revolutionary and easy to operate interface, yet to be really replaced (more like irreplaceable) by the touch one.

  • If they did go this route it would have to use glasses free 3D. I'm sure they would also have the ability to turn it off just like the Nintendo 3DS so I don't see why there would be a cause for alarm.

No, you can use laptops mid-flight, just not during take-off or landing (just like any other electronic device).

  • On the last page of Part 12 I posted a setup that is located in my home office (mainly used by my wife). Different room.

I decided to update my own office (kind of) with a brand spanking new iMac which is replacing my late 2009 Macbook Pro.

    Old Specs Macbook Pro 17":
2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB RAM
500GB + 80GB SSD ( took it out before selling)
    Nvidia 9400M + 9600M

    New Specs iMac:
    2.93Ghz i7
    8GB RAM
1TB Hard Drive + (still want my 80GB SSD inside this baby, but difficult to do so!)
    ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB

    So far, so good.

The speakers are also still there, but these are not shown in the picture.

    This is an old/new comparison.

Mind the quality, but my iPhone 4 broke (will be replaced) on me so I used an old iPhone first generation.

I kept the iPad 64Gb Wifi.

    Feedback is always welcome. :D

Just curious.. why would you put the iMac inside the window and block it entirely? Seems a bit odd

  • It looks like Apple got sick of the scratch complaints and went back to the Mini design. Odd that Apple would take a step back on the design front. Of course I always thought the Nanos were boring anyway, so maybe now this will give me an incentive to get one.

And let the "I have to pay how much extra for black" complaints begin...
At least you get 8GB instead of four. You don't pay that extra just for the color. The 50$ difference for that extra 4GB capacity is reasonable compared to the 200$ for 80GB instead of 60GB on the Macbook especially since you can upgrade the white macbook to 80GB for 50$. So the Macbook is actually 150$ for the color while the nano is 50$ for the color and the capacity.

  • Think you're imagining it. Have updated my MB and i still can't hear the fan in normal usage. I expect it will kick in at some time when it decides things are getting a bit hot.

The way I was able to make my fans kick in was to run the rss tester from http://www.macbookrandomshutdown.com/
Download and run the tester and it maxes out CPU cycles, before my mac would just shut off within 1-2 sec. Now the fans come on.

  • I think the point the video is trying to make is that buggy device drivers are a big hole into the OS (nothing earth shattering about that!). Presumably they did it against a Mac to get more publicity (and to be fair, if it had been a PC we'd have had people on here shouting about how insecure Windows is!), but the fact they used a 3rd party card raises lots of questions in my mind. The first is that it could be a single wireless card on the market that has such bad drivers that there are holes in all versions of their drivers. The second is that it is possible that they actually wrote the drivers themselves complete with holes they could "exploit". The thinking behind this suggestion is why on earth would any 3rd party manufacturer create a USB wireless card with Intel OSX drivers for it? (I don't think kernel device drivers can work under rosetta) - there wouldn't be a market for it at all. The other option is that the driver is the same one used for Airport, but in that case why not just exploit the Airport card?

IMO the message is a valid but simple one - your OS is only as secure as the device drivers it's using, but beyond that it's full of FUD

  • Unless it's an entirely new OS, like iOS 5 for example, it should be able to recognize what version your device is running and download only the essential features of the following update. Having to download the entire OS (which is over 600mb) every single time is a bit ridiculous.

  • I suggest everyone give this a shot...

    http://public-consultation.org/exercise/

This is a pretty cool exercise. I just fixed the US budget problems, and was able to increase spending on education, environmental protection, and assistance for low income families. All while shoring up social security and increasing benefits. Give it a shot everyone!

Your budget deficit for 2015: Surplus of 221.9B
Percentage of long term social security solved - 125%

TAX THE RICH, TAX THE RICH oh and cut military spending by 80%

    Problem solved

    Here is my budget:

Reduced spending by 175b$ by cutting defense and secret services by 2/3. Eliminating foreign military aid, large farm subsidies, eliminating foreign economic aid for special interest countries and immediately ending the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Agressively increased spending for all line items across the board including domestic security for the hawks in here and border security but especially forward looking investment type spending in research, education, infrastructure and the environment. Also increased small farm subsidies though I would tie that to organic/sustainable farming practices and eliminate subsidies for all conventional farming.

Increased taxes to the maximum allowable rate in the program for incomes starting at 200k$ while maintaining the tax cuts for the incomes below 200k$. That generated another 280b$ in deficit reduction.

Raised corporate income tax to the maximum allowable rate in the program. That generated another 100b$ in deficit reduction.

While it's peanuts I also raised carried interest taxation and turned it into regular income.

Took the 9b$ risk fee from the banks, together with carried interest that made another 10b$.

Garnered carbon taxation at maximum worth 115b$.

Took in 12b$ on booze tax.

Garnered the 36B$ of maximum soda pop tax (considering how toxic it is and how much it is responsible for the rise of Diabetes, it's a fair tax)

At this point the budget was balanced. Now on to generating a surplus and pay off that Chinese debt.

Garnered 330b$ in surplus for a 10% VAT, would consider reducing it to half of that once the debt is close to being paid off. Rest would go toward increasing forward looking spending on research and education.

Garnered another 20b$ for estate taxation although I would be much more aggressive here than the program. Small to lower mid-size family run companies and small farms would be excluded while the 55% tariff would hit immediately at 500k$. I would eliminate the ability of super-rich people to harbor money through trust funds and socalled charities and living wills.

Either way, I am running a 353b$ surplus with a strong forward looking spending policy.

For social security I increased the contribution by the 0.1% point and included all wages into it. Changed to a flexible COLA calculation and increased entry level benefits. Retirement age remains the same.

50% surplus. Surplus funds would be siphoned off specifically to pay off national debt and then split half and half into a crisis fund for the next recession and the other half into special care provision for the elderly.

Btw. when I say paying off debt I would pay off debt for fed, state and municipalities and write in laws that all levels of government have to balance their budgets and make issue of public debt illegal. Also I would force all levels of government to undergo annual public audits on their spending.
    Cheers,

    Ahmed

  • Ah, it was nice to read some good news for a change. :)

My 2 cents: The MacBook are definitely going to be updated this month. Most likely tomorrow. Why do I think this? AppleInsider has reliable sources, they have never completely been wrong. The MacBooks will get Core 2 Duos (1.83, 2.0, 2.16), 802.11n cards, and possibly hard drive & RAM increase. Realistically we won't be getting a dedicated graphics card, bigger screens, or firewire 800.

Enjoying my Core 2 Duo MBP.

Maybe the Facebook app will get better. Perhaps he was frustrated that someone kept pointing out all the problems with the app.

If you're going to vent your "philosophical" issues, you need to make sure that your "real world" issues are all in order first. Otherwise, you look like a sore loser.

    Why not 4GB of RAM?
The system uses some of the 4 GiB of physical address space to map I/O busses and devices.

For example, that 256 MiB of VRAM on the graphics card appears in the physical address space -- which means that only 3.75 GiB is available for real memory. PCIe busses take more, as well as network and other needs. PCI Express reserves a lot of memory for I/O space.

A with a 32-bit chipset the OS has to "ignore" any real memory that's usurped by I/O space reserved addressing. A 64-bit chipset (with a 64-bit OS) doesn't have that problem.

I have a 4 GiB Dell D620, but Windows and Linux only see about 3.1 GiB of that due to the I/O space issues. I expect that OSX86 has the same restrictions - since it's a hardware issue.

IBM only offers 3 GiB configs of the same Yonah/Napa combination - apparently to avoid "where's the rest of my memory" complaints. It looks like Apple is copying IBM's approach.
    _____________________

The ProMac has a 64-bit capable chipset, so the memory extensions that were used for the PowerMac G5 can be used to avoid this issue.

The Napa chipset is 32-bit - Santa Rosa will be 64-bit.

Oh boy, get up early Sunday morning to wait in line with scalpers...

I won't wait in line either... but I do hope this helps satisfy demand. Lack of availability is getting to be an old/tiresome story. I want to buy an iPad, but don't want to stand in line from 3 AM to do so.
