  • Of course the banner has no new images on it. Why would it? That would spoil the keynote! And of course it has the Leopard DVD, everyone knows there will be a preview.

And as for all those people saying that there won't be any new consumer products at the keynote... wasn't the iSight announced at a WWDC?

  • Seriously, i could care less about the wait...my computer works fine. I am currently using an Apple IIc...it kicks ass. I had to update it a bit to be able to use the internet though. Do you think i would be better to wait for the Santa Rosa platform to get a MBP? or just get the merom on the current.....and please don't say "if you keep waiting, there will always be something new around the corner and you will wait forever."

I still have an Apple IIe somewhere is my house those computers seriously were cool when they were released how many years ago.

And you a right about putting off until the next update, I think most users forget about the "what do I really need?" question and concerntrate on the latest and greatest "next tuesday" release. I'm still using my G4 Mac Mini, it does everything I need but it doesn't have a Merom, Santa Rosa, etc and I am one happy Mac user.

  • That was my reading, that they were ordered by their sbosses in the company to get the manuscripts ready and sent to Apple, presumably because of a deal between the two companies.

The problem with this rumor is that publishing companies most certainly would not send over *manuscripts*, which lack production editing, but rather *page proofs* or even *mechanicals*, which are post-production editing, or (since they're far more likely to have these than proofs), *loose pages* from remaindered or warehoused books. I can't imagine that they would be working from manuscripts, as they would have versioning issues (the manuscript is not the final version of what it published, as authors nearly always make changes to galley proofs, and editors *always* make changes between the manuscript and the galleys; but changes are rarely made after the page proofs, and almost never after the mechanicals); and I can't imagine that anyone in the publishing business would speak of "manuscripts" when what they much more likely to be talking about is loose pages.

  • If they increase the amount of RAM to 1GB they could increase the amount the integrated graphics use to around 128mb, the current 64mb is a bit low.
The 64 MB quoted for the GMA950 is actually a "sliding window". It can (and often does) request a larger chunk of video RAM from the memory controller as required. Out of that chunk, the GMA950 slides around its 64 MB window to adjust which areas of memory it can directly manipulate at any given time.

(According to Apple's website, simply booting MacOS X on a MacBook or Mac Mini causes the graphics system to commandeer approximately 80 MB of RAM.)

    __________
BTW, that's the reason why computers running the GMA950 chipset will be able to run Windows Vista using the new Aero interface, despite the fact
that systems with dedicated video RAM of less than 128 MB will have to use the Classic (Windows 95/98) interface.

  • Here's a work around maybe. Under Systems Preferences > Network > Airport

Click on Configure and then Options...

I wonder if this is a specific to X86 hardware... Does this effect ppc based hardware?

Oh, probably should ask for admin psswd to change networks as well...

The issue is, the computer will automatically connect to a spoofed wireless network. Meaning, they can grab the SSIDs you've ever connected to in your preferred networks list right out from the air, as both OSX and XP broadcast such information. If they find an open network, they can broadcast on their computer as an Access Point with that SSID. A lot of people don't seem to understand this. Theoretically, you could be working on your computer at a non-wifi airport and someone else can come in, see your SSIDs being broadcast by your card, and create a faux wireless network with that access point name. This type of attack has been known for a VERY long time though, I'm surprised this has just come out as soon as it did.

  • Fair thought - but aren't Apple a Global company with a global product? I would have thought anything local wouldn't impact on a worldwide strategy...but then again...

Apple is primarily an American company and they know that the news cycle will be heavy with Election Results. They can wait until next week and get more bang for the same buck. Europe (Australia, Asia, etc. ) will be just as happy with a Nov. 14 release as Nov. 7.

  • Wow, I have already replied to this one above, but below is his brother apparently.

So even though I have a MBP and not a PB I can probably get a new battery as well by changing the serial numbers despite what is really on my battery.

    COOL!!!!!!!!!!

That's seriously not cool. For one, you're basically stealing someone else's replacement battery, since when they put in their number that happens to have a C instead of your B it's going to say they already sent the battery out. And second, when it comes time to return your defective battery don't you think they're going to notice it's entirely the wrong type?

    Bad plan.

If the specs are good enough, then maybe this will be my first mac....

Frankly, the vast majority of users, and developers, and content providers, DO NOT care what you personally want, no matter how much you roll your eyes.

Flash is on virtually every computer on Earth, and pretty soon it will be on virtually every smart phone as well. Except the iPhone, of course.

Flash works very well, for the vast majority of users. The fact that Apple has not expended the minimum effort required to get Flash working more efficiently in OS X, is mostly problem for only those relatively few of us, who prefer to use Mac OS.

(In my testing on OS 10.6.1, Safari is by far the worst of all browsers at handling Flash: it pushes the CPU to 77%, while Firefox and Camino stay at less than 49%. Safari is also by far the worst on Windows 7, where on the same video it runs to almost 30% of CPU, while IE8 is at 1%, and Firefox and Chrome are at 4%.

The vast majority of users enjoy what Flash provides.

And, Flash does things which would be impossible, or very hard, or prohibitively expensive, to do with other currently available technologies, and deploy them for all browsers and systems.

So, I repeat: the rest of the world DOES NOT care, that you, and a handful of weird backroom guys, have an irrational hatred of Flash. Move on.

The bottom line is, if Apple doesn't get Flash on the iPhone, it will quickly lose market share to Android. It's a HUGE missing feature, bigger than cut/paste and turn-by turn navigation and mms rolled together, and you can bet it will be advertised as such.

I'm amazed that you investigated so heavily the CPU usage and yet STILL came to the wrong conclusion, that this is Apple's fault.

For the record, you're completely wrong that FLASH works well on anything but Windows PCs.

Did you not notice in those numbers that FLASH doesn't work well on ALL MACS ON ALL BROWSERS ??? And FLASH is the reason for crashes on both POWERPC and INTEL Macs, even brand new Macs, from what I'm reading in other threads here on MacRumors.

So, how again is this Apple's fault that FLASH doesn't work on any recent Apple platform, iPhone, PowerPC, or INTEL?

Because Adobe doesn't care and has written crappy software. It has nothing to do with Apple.
Not much else crashes any of my Macs, so how is this Apple's fault?

Can you imagine what would happen if Apple let the current version of FLASH on the iPhone and peoples' phones started crashing like their Apple Macs are now? It would be on FOX NEWS!
Apple's making the right call here. The ball is in Adobe's court to get it right first on Macs.
Then I'll insist Apple let FLASH on the iPhone, but not a day sooner.

And I will bet dollars to doughnuts that your Android prediction turns out wrong too, FLASH or no FLASH.

I am constantly going to websites that I cannot view because the iPhone is lacking Flash player. You don't like Flash? Great, if there is something better out there, then competition will cause the better product to prevail. But for now, iPhone users are being deprived of THOUSANDS of Flash websites that other smartphone owners are able to view!!!!!!!!!!

Why is Apple blocking Flash? This is one for the FCC! Same reason that Microsoft used to block Netscape. Apple wants websites to use Apple software and not Flash. FAIL! It's a violation of free markets! Here comes a Netscape-Microsoft lawsuit in the Supreme Court, except this time with Flash-Apple.

If FLASH is an epic fail on both INTEL and POWERPC Macs and with both Safari and Firefox on Macs, how the hell do you think it's going to do on the iPhone?

This is NOT Apple's problem in my opinion. Adobe has just dropped the ball.
If FLASH crashes on most people's Macs, how do you think it will fair on the iPhone, since it's mostly the same browser?

Please people, think before you put your feet in your mouths.

Not happy with it, but meh. I'll just buy a 160gb Classic if they're not planning on updating. I'm using my 80gb now just for videos and it's much better than my iPod touch; which is a super fine PDA.

I guess I'm waiting for the capacity of flash drives to match microdrives.
