  • Jetson, I'm glad I'm taking your word, as someone who doesn't even own a 5G iPod, over my own, someone who sees 50-60 iPods a day. I couldn't possibly know better.

The fact remains: The acrylic used on the 5G is the same as the 4G.

  • What gives anyone the right to put down another person's passion or something they're enthusiastic about? If a friend of mine buys an expensive new car and it didn't suit my own personal taste, I would at least try and be polite about it and not belittle them by saying "what a pile of crap! you spent all that money on that piece of junk?" It's damn rude!

A friend of a friend of mine who once visited my apartment made a snide comment about my iMac. I immediately replied "your t-shirt makes you look fat and ugly", which was met by a very awkward moment of silence. I followed up by saying "don't be rude about my personal taste and I won't be rude about yours."
Needless to say he probably left thinking I'm some nutter who has an unhealthy relationship with my computer, but I'm glad I made the point.

But I do agree that a lot of it is just jealousy. I've known many people who were once very vocal about their hate for Apple and the iPhone, who have since become iPhone owners themselves and now love it.

And perhaps you could remind those who smirk that you've spent 500 on your phone that they too will likely be paying a similar amount for their smartphone over the course of their contract, but with an unlocked iPhone you also have the added benefit of being able to take advantage of much cheaper "sim only" tariffs which you're not locked in to.

  • Although the data transferred may be the same or more with on-demand streams, when it's live there will be much higher simultaneous usage. With high-end hosting in general, simultaneous usage is the killer and not really total bandwidth usage. With the popularity of Apple these days the number of simultaneous streams could be extremely high (I mean, if MacRumors gets 100,000 visitors simultaneously think what Apple would get themselves). If they tried to offer a live audio stream, would that produce the same simultaneous usage problem, even though the bandwidth would be reduced?

No- it just means that people with no regard for the law will have that capability, while you won't.

  • Any one that proposes using diesel or gas because of the impact it "might" have on our national grid (which by the way depends on where you live, i.e. Nuclear power plants for California, renewable hydro-electric for Las Vegas, etc...) pales in comparison to incidents like... oh say... the GULF OIL SPILL!!! What did that cost so far? Tens of billions. Not to mention the amount of lives it has ruined! Wonder how many electric cars could have been made and powered over the course of a year on that bill?

Internal combustion engines should have died off over 50 years ago.

  • Considering communism is dependent on control of the resources so they can be equally doled out, it's not free and open. You're thinking of anarchy.
    Your username is appropriate.

I was referring to things that work in theory and not in practice. Now that you have me going about it though, communism is, in theory, open and in practice, not open. You are describing the practice of it, not the theory. Thanks for proving my point.

  • Been playing Zombie mode all weekend... it's really frustrating without a mic, though, since I can't communicate and everyone seems to be doing their own thing. Need to be able to talk to collaborate and get to the higher rounds, I think.

That said, it's super-addicting. Nothing relieves stress like blasting Zombies. :D

I haven't made it into the Multiplayer yet. The last few times I've tried the servers haven't been responding... I've had an easier time getting on the servers to play Zombies, though...

Single player campaign is pretty typical of COD, imo. It's pretty good... If anything, though, this game is encouraging me to go buy World at War for half the price and just play Zombies. Hah!

On November 24th Apple will be holding their annual Day After Thanksgiving sale (U.S. only) which is a one day event. What's notable about this event is that Apple rarely discounts their products, normally strictly following their manufactuer suggested retail prices. That being said, once sales tax and/or shipping costs and factored in, individual customers may still do better when purchasing from other online retailers.

Like last year (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=1934318&postcount=69), Apple will only be offering savings on specific products. A preliminary list available at this time reveals the following sales:

$11 off of iPods and iPod nanos
    $20 off of Adobe Elements
    $69 for .Mac
Unspecified discounts on the MacBook and Shure headphones

Final prices and offers will be posted when made available. The sale will be offered at their retail stores as well as the online Apple Store.

  • They might get laughed at but apple will be the ones laughing when their the first to debut santa rosa with 800mhz fsb and nand flash. Hopefully this is whats going to happen
Apple won't be first, they'll either announce the same day as HP/Dell/Lenovo/Acer/Asus/... - or they'll announce later.

With Yonah, Merom, Woodcrest and Conroe, the pattern has been "later".

At some point the consumer experience is not appreciably improved by processor improvements. Except for media processing intensive applicatons, we are there.

That alone ia an amazing statement for the Apple platform.

Can any other platform say that or even promise that any time within 2 years?
Windows and Linux are running on the same platform, and both have proven SMP capabilities far beyond what Apple is selling.

Most of the quad and octo systems at IDF were running XP, W2K3, or Vista. None were running OSX.

  • As a fan of Japanese architecture and minimalism myself, this is a refreshing idea to read about. Nothing beats a mix of modern and Japanese architecture.

one hell of a story man
    hope u find it

Most Americans do not have what you do. And to the person who said I've never experienced "4 screaming kids," I have.

I think you both are just use to having more, and space, and more space. My grandmother raised her six children in a three bedroom, one bath home that she shared with my grandfather and never had any issues. My grandparents, mother or my aunts never complained, and looking back, I think the experience enriched them tenfold. My grandparents were successful and could have afforded a home with "enough space" (by your standards) for all their kids, but they made out just fine in the first floor of an apartment building with "just" 2,200sq. feet.

Used to having more? No. I am one of eight kids and my wife is one of ten. We both grew up in modest houses. Mine was 4 bedrooms 2 baths, same as hers. It did not enrich my life. My sister and I never got along because of tight quarters, and after we moved out our relationship remained tense. We finally started getting along just before she died. My house now is 4 bedrooms 2 baths, one of which is converted to an office. My sons and daughters share their rooms. But, given another chance (we bought the house before our first, who would have thought there'd be 3 more) we would have made a home elsewhere. Now that this is home, it's hard to leave.

Don't presume to know my "standards". We have enough space, but doing it all over I'd choose more. I work hard. I make money accordingly. What's money for if not improving the lives of my family? I don't want a big house for no purpose, I'd just like enough to give my children some personal space so they don't have to collide every day.

G'Day Tangles, welcome to the boards. You're right though, US$20 is a lot of money compared to DVD prices.

Oh I hope you get the Tangles reference, otherwise I've just made a goose of myself.

I got it Chundles, but maybe his name really is Max Walker? ;)

If it's true that the USD20 includes portable-compatible files, then it's slightly more attractive (at least to the less tech-savvy). It's also 100 per cent legal too.

But they really have to consider opening the pricing structure up to rentals at some stage, movies and music really are two different things, and unless the sale prices are really competitive (these aren't) then there's no incentive for buying/renting patterns to change.

What kept me often from buying apps was the too complicated paying system: You have to register, give them the number of your credit card, remember the password of the login and so on. The MAS makes this a lot easier and safer. Apple's decision to only allow MAS apps for the Design Award is to push developers to publish their apps on the MAS. What's wrong with that?

What's wrong with it is it expressly denies potentially stellar Mac apps from possibly winning the award, due to Apple's arguably arbitrary "rules" as to what apps are allowed in said store.

Rather lame considering Apple's own apps seem to be except from the same rules.

Retail theft is on the books everywhere and rooted in old common law. The States only vary on degrees (ie classes of misdemeanors).

Not so. Where I am from (which I guess would be Chicago, Illinois, since I am the President), there is only one theft offense and nothing specific to retail. Under that statute, I'm not sure the OP would be subject to prosecution.

I stand by my initial statement that one should not be so quick to make blanket statements.
